Dr. Forrest A. Newlin was a designer, a historian, a teacher and a founding member of SWUSITT. He served on the board of directors of SWUSITT as treasurer, but his passion was expanding the experience of his students. By ensuring that there were opportunities for students of Southwest, through the formation of student chapters at his school, to making sure that they had a ride to the conference.  It is this dedication to the mission of SWUSITT that the Board of Directors renamed the SWUSITT Founders award, the Forrest A. Newlin Founders Award for Lifetime Service to SWUSITT.

Mildred and Glenn Martin Jr. were owners of the Texas Scenic Company. Mildred’s parents Adolf and Martha Beck founded the company in 1932. “Millie and Big Glenn” as they were known through the industry were avid supporters of the arts and education through their work with Texas Scenic, TETA and SWUSITT. It is that spirit of service SWUITT sought to honor with the naming of the Award in 1992.

Oscar Brockett exemplified the field of research and education.  As a Guggenheim Fellow and Fulbright scholar, he made the study and teaching of theatre his life’s work.  It is with that spirit and commitment to excellence in teaching that SWUSITT named the Oscar G Brocket award for Excellence in Teaching in the Southwest Region.

The Don J. Childs Award for Annual Student Service was established by past SWUSITT president Don Childs. This award sought to honor the dedication and service to the organization, of a student member of SWUSITT. Anyone that knew Don knew that he valued hard work and dedication above almost anything else. It was with that spirit that he wanted to recognize, and set as an example, the service of a Student Member each year that went above and beyond in their work and membership to SWUSITT.
